EU Court bans Internet filters against file sharing

ISPs may not be under any obligation to filter the illegal exchange of music files between Internet users to avoid.
The control of the Internet on so-called file sharing between computers should not be prescribed, among other reasons, because this could also lead to the blocking of permissible communications, the ECJ ruled in Luxembourg.

Online traffic is not allowed under the general supervision

The court ruled that to the Belgian copyright organization SABAM. This had to force the provider Scarlet Extended, set up filters to the data exchange. SABAM wanted to keep using so-called peer-to-peer networks - Music and changed so that the copyright is being violated - in which individual computers are connected. File sharing protocols like BitTorrent are used but also for the legal distribution of large amounts of data.
The Association of German eco Internet Industry welcomed the decision. The EU's highest court ruled that the Directive on electronic commerce, prohibits a general monitoring of the network information transmitted. The right to property is enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. But this does not mean "that this law would provide protection to be unlimited and, therefore, unconditionally."
The establishment of a filter system would also lead to a "qualified impairment of entrepreneurial freedom" of the Internet provider. He would be a "complex, costly, long-term" forced computer science system at their own expense. Also contrary, such a filter against the protection of personal data. Moreover, a filter could not possibly distinguish between protected and non protected data - this could lead to blocking acceptable content.

Vettel wants record and perfect final victory

Christmas spirit may not arise in Sao Paulo. For the first time a Formula-1-finals on the first Sunday of Advent is about the stage. Sebastian Vettel could be paid after the second world title a record yet. The German wants to conclude the sole record of pole positions set up in one season. Currently, Vettel with 14 pole positions tied with Nigel Mansell 1992nd

Vettel is anxious above all to make the disappointment of Abu Dhabi forget when he brought a tire failure on his Red Bull racing car in the first round of the first loss of the season. The exact cause is still unclear. His twelfth win of the season but would be perfectionist Vettel to take out a splendid season. "Then pleased it certain that it's over," said the 24-year-old double world champion.
Red Bull had last year in Brazil with a double win by Vettel and Mark Webber still a week before the finale in Abu Dhabi made the first Constructors world title perfectly. The Bulls also have the 2011 already in the bag.
The pole position at the Autodromo Carlos Pace won last year but the sensational German Nico Hulkenberg, currently only reservist with Force India, in the Williams. The changing conditions at Interlagos to surprises can sometimes make their contribution. "When it rains, as is likely in Sao Paulo, there are extreme hydroplaning," said Vettel. In addition, the altitude of about 800 meters would cost a bit of power.
Vettel during his trophies, you can hardly count, it's only rival for his consolation prize for the runner-up title. Jenson Button is in the best position for it, but he is ten points ahead of Ferrari star Fernando Alonso in the final. Only with a win - it would be his first since Hungary in August 2010 - could the 22 meter past Webber theoretically ensure the total triumph for Red Bull.

25-dollar credit card sized PC

Scientists of the computer Laboratory at Cambridge University have developed a novel low-cost computers, which only has the size of a credit card and will cost only 25 dollars (19 euros).
The tiny, in the name of "Raspberry Pi"Listen, to be sold starting in mid-2012 the same about the British charity organization. The aim of the Action: By providing a convenient and inexpensive machine need to be addressed, especially children, in order to train in computer skills and discover the joy of programming.
"We produce, develop and distribute an ultra-low-cost computers to bring the youth programming closer," it says on the website of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which campaigns for the promotion of computer sciences and other related issues in schools . "Anyone with even a little pocket money, can afford these machines," adds co-developer Robert Mullins told the Wall Street Journal. "We observed a decrease in people seeking a degree in computer science. With our product we want to awaken the joy of programming, "said Mullins.

Technically, wholesome

Technically, the Raspberry Pi is a full-fledged computer in your pocket, to be offered in two different versions. Model A for $ 25 consists of an ARM11-based processor with 700 MHz, 128 megabytes of RAM, a USB 2.0 port, a slot for SD cards, a 3.5-mm audio and an HDMI video output. With some generous feature set, however, the model comes for $ 35 B thus: Here are 256 megabytes of RAM, built an additional Ethernet interface and a 2-port USB hub.
According to information from the manufacturer of innovative mini-PC at the beginning, only the operating system distributions, Debian, Fedora and ArchLinux will support that are stored on an SD card. "The final software package must be resolved first," notes Mullins. Special bonus: The Raspberry Pi does not require an additional monitor and can be connected to any TV set. The video output supports a 1080p signal 30, and OpenGL ES 2.0. The power supply works either on a 5V MicroUSB interface or alternatively via four AA batteries.

More than 10,000 on waiting list

According to Mullins, the development work for Raspberry Pi has already begun about three years ago. When the device is finally available for interested buyers actually available at this time but can not say exactly. "We hope the middle of next year to have a product on the market," says computer scientist. Already, there is a waiting list of more than 10,000 customers.

Ham Radio’s Popularity At All-Time High

Never mind Pandora and other online radio stations, a decidedly low-tech alternative has continued to spread on the periphery. Amateur, or ham radio, is more popular than at any time in U.S. history, according to a recent report from the American Radio Relay League, the largest organization of ham radio operators in the U.S.
The ARRL counted over 700,000 amateur radio licenses granted by the FCC in 2011, compared to about 450,000 in the mid-1990s.
“At the end of September, I saw that the number of hams in the US was high,” said ARRL manager Maria Somma in a press release from the organization, “When I started comparing that number with other years, I found that it was an all-time high.”
Indeed, statistics of U.S. amateur radio licenses tabulated by the group over the last four decades have found an overall increase in the number of amateur radio operators, with a slight lag in growth in the 1980s and an explosion in interest in the 1990s that’s carried over into the first decade of the 21st century.
Retirees and “emergency groups,” are the main sources of the new licenses, according to the ARRL via Fox .
Indeed, for one example of the usefulness of ham radios in the advent of an emergency, turn to Birmingham, Alabama, where amateur radio operators helped connect local and nation emergency responders in the wake of tornadoes that struck the city in April, the UAB Reporter noted.
Some of the recent interest is attributable to the removal of the morse code component of the ham radio licensing test in 2007, according to eHam.net.
Other ham radio operators theorize, based on experience, that the recession and high levels of unemployment are driving people towards the relatively low-cost hobby.
Of course, despite its decidedly low-tech appeal, ham radio has also benefitted from two major technological revolutions: the satellite and the Internet. Free downloadable ham radiosoftware has obliterated the cost of entry for new ham radio adopters, allowing users without much technical expertise or guidance to begin chatting with other ham radio operators around the globe.
Meanwhile, there are upwards of 40 amateur radio satellitesOSCAR, was launched in 1961. Now, there are several organizations around the world dedicated to getting amateur radio satellites launched, including the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT)International Amateur Radio Union. orbiting the earth currently — that is, satellites that are dedicated to communicating with amateur radio operators on Earth. The first such amateur satellite, and the
Ham radio operators are also keen to listen to the frequencies of other, regular commercial and governmental satellites and have published step-by-step instructions for doing so online.
Ham radio works by utilizing radio frequencies above the AM band (1.6 Mhz), and is thus not found on regular broadcast radio stations. Read more about the technology here.
