The history of St. Basil’s Cathedral and its nine domes
St. Basil’s Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, turns 450 years old on July 12 of this year. It was built on Red Square, near the Kremlin’s Savior Gates, from 1555-1561. Tsar Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral's construction to commemorate his victory in a campaign against the Kazan Khanate.
