Severe earthquake in Burma - one dead

 

A major earthquake measuring 6.8 rocked on Thursday the border triangle between Thailand, Laos and Burma. In the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai was a woman slain in her bed of rubble, media reported the country. The region is remote and difficult to achieve in the night.

The epicenter was in Burma, almost 590 kilometers northeast of the port city of Rangoon, and about 90 kilometers north of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, said the U.S. USGS earthquake waiting with. About the extent of the damage there was initially no information.

The earthquake at 20.25 local time (14.55 GMT) was both in Rangoon and in the capital, Naypyidaw felt within the country, reported residents. "The residents of high rise buildings in Rangoon have felt the tremor significantly," reported a shoreline along. Some are running on the streets. "Many people were in shock, because the news of the earthquake in Japan are all too fresh."

The earthquake occurred according to latest figures just ten kilometers below the earth's surface. It could therefore have caused severe damage. Burma had experienced a devastating storm disaster in 2008. Cyclone Nargis broke from the south on the shores of the Irrawaddy Delta in and tore estimated 140,000 people to their deaths. (APA)
