918 Spyder supercar to be Porsche’s most expensive model ever
Porsche announced Monday the sale of its most expensive model ever, the 918 Spyder hybrid “super sports car.” The luxury German carmaker will make just 918 units costing a cool €645,000 – before tax, that is.
The company has begun accepting orders for the fancy model, with plans to begin delivery in November 2013, Porsche said in a statement. The car will cost an estimated €770,000 ($1,091,690) in Germany including the country's value-added tax. For the same amount, a driver could purchase 46 Volkswagen Golfs.
First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the car consumes just three litres of fuel per 100 kilometres - the equivalent of 94 miles per imperial gallon.
“Despite that, the super sports car offers performance of the highest order,” and has received an “outstanding customer response,” the company said.

The 918 Spyder’s high-performance V8 engine – plus two electric engines on the front and rear axle - accelerates to 100 kilometres per hour in just 3.2 seconds, and reaches speeds as fast as 320 kph, according to the statement.
Critically, the 918 Spyder emits an average of just 70 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre, the firm claims. According to Britain’s Department for Transport, the third-generation Toyota Prius – the best-known hybrid car – emits 89 g/km.
It’s Porsche’s offering to the growing market for hybrid cars that combine an internal combustion engine with electric propulsion, dramatically slashing the amount of greenhouse gasses the car emits.
The futuristic two-seater’s design will remain true to the 2010 concept car, but the production version will also have a manual roof system with removable panels that drivers can store in the luggage compartment.
The vehicle is powered by a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that charges in about three hours within Germany, and varies in other countries depending on electricity networks. It also has a “quick charging” option, the statement said.
