Police clash with protesters in central Tehran - opposition
Iranian regime loyalists hold a poster with doctored pictures of former president Mohammad Khatami (L) and opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi (C) and Mehdi Karroubi on the gallows during a pro-government demonstration on February 18, 2011.
Police used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters in central Tehran on Tuesday, the Iranian opposition said.
Opposition websites kaleme.com and sahamnews.org reported that plainclothes police and security forces were dispersing demonstrators near Tehran university, in Freedom Square and in other parts of the city.
The protests were organized by a group demanding that opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi be released.
The kaleme.com site reported on Monday that that Hossein and Karroubi had been jailed along with their wives, but the Iranian authorities said the information was false.
