Toilet Entrepreneurs, Powered By MIT Innovation

Sanergy is a business full of waste. The startup—funded in part by the U.S. government—gives toilets away to business people in the slums, who charge for use. In exchange, Sanergy gets the… leftovers, which they convert into electricity and sell.

About 8 million Kenyans lack access to proper sanitation, and in some urban areas the problem of “flying toilets," a plastic bag used for defecation and then flung into the slums, is legendary. A 2006 UN Development Program report found that in the Kibera section of Nairobi two out of three residents used a plastic bag as their main disposal method.

To help solve this problem—which, apart from creating a heinous living environment, also causes multiple diseases—a group of recent MIT graduates has come up with an ingenious solution, and today USAID and its new Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) fund gave the project $100,000.
Their idea, which has grown into a business called Sanergy, is to franchise out low-cost toilet units to on-the-ground entrepreneurs, and then collect the waste for conversion to fertilizer and electricity. By taking a market-based approach, they reckon they can create a sustainable development model that will not only make a dent in the sanitation problem, but also generate income and jobs for local people.

The idea grew out of a Development Ventures class at MIT’s Sloan School of Management taught by Professor Sandy Pentland. Since graduating in May, the students have raised a total of $600,000, including the cash from USAID.
Sanergy hopes to install more than 6,000 toilets, reaching up to 600,000 residents, by 2015. Each toilet costs about $450, which the entrepreneurs fund either with their own money, or through a loan from one of two micro-finance organizations that have agreed to take part. The entrepreneurs make money by charging for-use fees, signing up residents for membership plans, and by selling additional hygiene products.
The waste is collected daily and wheeled to intermediate processing points, and from there to a centralized facility where it is broken down in an anaerobic digester. The digester produces both methane, which can be burned in a plant to make electricity, and an effluent that can be turned into fertilizer and sold on for agriculture.
“As my grandmother likes to say, this is an input that never runs out,” says cofounder David Auerbach. “It is chucked everywhere, and causes disease if it’s not treated properly. We’re adamant about reducing sanitation-related disease, and in the end this is what this is about.”
The profit motive is important, though. Sanergy reckons that Kenya’s 10 million slums represent a potential $72 million market, and it says that incentivizing the entrepreneurs to take the toilets is vital. Meanwhile, USAID DIV, which is seeking market-based fixes to development problems, will only provide further funding if Sanergy can prove its waste-management system works.
Sanergy is starting with a 60-toilet pilot in Kwa Ruben, Kwa Njenga, and Lunga Lunga areas of Nairobi, before it scales up. It has its own facility to build the toilets, which it designed in consultation with local people, and it is currently building the digester unit. It can start producing electricity once it has franchised its first 1,000 toilets.
“The Nairobi City Council has plans for sewers to come in, but these are the most marginalized areas of the city and it will be years before that happens,” says Auerbach. “In the meantime, our facilities are a pragmatic solution that helps clean up the slums.”
It is too early to call an end to Nairobi’s notorious flying toilets. But hopefully Sanergy’s fresh approach can succeed where traditional aid programs have failed.

latest browser plugin beats the national firewalls of Britain, USA, and China

Efforts to censor the Internet are increasing in the Western world. In the US lawmakers are currently discussing legislation (SOPA/PIPA) that could take out The Pirate Bay, or disable access to it. In several other countries such as Italy, Finland and Belgium, courts have already ordered Internet Providers to block their users’ access to the site. Demonstrating the futility of these efforts, a small group of developers today releases a browser add-on called “The Pirate Bay Dancing.”

When Homeland Security’s ICE unit started seizing domain names last year, a group called “MAFIAAFire” decided to code a browser add-on to redirect the affected websites to their new domains.
The release went viral and by now more than 200,000 people have installed the add-on. ICE wasn’t happy with this and asked Mozilla to pull the add-on from their site. However, Mozilla denied the request, arguing that this type of censorship may threaten the open Internet.
Today MAFIAAFire delivers a new release that aims to thwart the increasing censorship efforts in countries worldwide. Named “The Pirate Bay Dancing,” the Firefox add-on undoes local DNS and IP blocks by routing users through a series of randomly picked proxies.
The MAFIAAFire team told TorrentFreak that the development of the plugin was partly motivated by SOPA and PIPA, the pending anti-piracy bills in the US.
“DNS and IP blocking is probably the most dangerous part of SOPA/PIPA in terms of ‘breaking the Internet,’ so we tackled that first. We will be going after the other parts of SOPA in later releases but probably not in ‘our usual plugin form’ – the other parts require different solutions that we have already started work on,” we were told.
Although the add-on carries The Pirate Bay in its name it also works with other sites such as Newsbin2 and BTJunkie which are blocked in the UK and Italy respectively. In a broader sense it can also be used to bypass national “firewalls” such as in China, and soon perhaps the US.
Putting the add-on to work only requires two clicks and is completely free.
After the add-on is installed users can specify the websites for which they want it to work, and these sites then trigger a response from the plugin. If someone from Italy for example chooses to unblock The Pirate Bay, the add-on will save this preference and load the site through a proxy on the next visit.
MAFIAAFire is using thousands of proxies which will be rotated constantly, hence the (dirty) dancing. The current version is fully working but TorrentFreak was told that the functionality will be expanded in future releases.
The MAFIAAFire team told TorrentFreak that they were eager to help The Pirate Bay out, as the site’s operators have been an inspiration to them. The Pirate Bay team on their turn will soon feature the add-on on their homepage.
“Saving TPB was a big deal to us, we love the site and how it has stood the test of time while dozens of others fell, bent over or were run over. The MAFIAA have been trying to take down TPB’s sails for years, country by country, this extends its life a little more to give it smooth sailing,” TorrentFreak was told.
“In the bigger picture, other than the US’ SOPA we also have each country experimenting with its own mini-firewall. This makes all those blocks in all those countries, and all the millions the MAFIAA have spent to get to there, useless,” the MAFIAAFire team added.
While the latest MAFIAAFire add-on shows how easy it is to bypass these censorship attempts, supporters of the measures would argue that it will nonetheless stop the vast majority of casual pirates.
The creators of “The Pirate Bay Dancing” are not ignorant of this, but aside from delivering a working product, one of their main goals is to send a signal that censorship is never the right path to take. Judging from the recognition they’ve received so far, they sure have succeeded on that front.

Apple Says Siri’s Abortion Answers Are a Glitch

Apple said Wednesday that the apparent inability of Siri, the virtual assistant in the iPhone 4S,  to retrieve information about abortion clinics and women’s health services in some areas was not intentional or deliberate.
The company attributed the problem to kinks in the product that were still being ironed out. Siri is officially still a beta or test product.
“Our customers want to use Siri to find out all types of information, and while it can find a lot, it doesn’t always find what you want,” said Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple, in a phone interview late Wednesday. “These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better, and we will in the coming weeks.”
Siri’s odd behavior was first noted earlier this week by several bloggers who found that they were not able to get complete or accurate results when searching for information about reproductive health services. When asked to find an abortion clinic in Manhattan, for example, Siri’s answer is: “Sorry, I couldn’t find any abortion clinics.”
The service’s answers and nonanswers quickly began to attract attention around the Web, prompting several organizations, including the NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation, to release statements asking Apple to address the discrepancies.
Norman Winarsky, who runs a research and investment firm called SRI Ventures and was one of the founders of Siri before Apple bought it in 2010, said in an interview on Tuesday that data from the third-party services Siri uses to generate its results could be causing the disconnect. Mr. Winarsky said he had no knowledge of how Siri was changed after it was acquired by Apple.

The Best Siri Hacks So Far

Dissatisfied with Siri's already impressive personal assistant skills, hackers have taken her to the next level, manipulating her technology to do more than just send text messages. Within weeks, we got a glimpse of Siri's capabilities when an ad agency rigged her to open a can of beer and another hacked her to unlock a door, using arduino technology. Since then, developer Pete Lamonica has provided a new platform for others looking to extend Siri's abilities, developing Siri Proxy, a server that can be used to connect the iPhone command system to other objects. Lamonica's hack can be traced back further to Steven Troughton-Smith, who successfully found a (complicated) way to bypass Siri's authentication servers in order to install the voice-controlled miracle on any iOS device, including iPads, iPod Touches and the iPhone 3GS just a few days after Siri hit the market. On Monday, fellow jailbreaker Eric Day released a set of instructions that simplifies that process and makes it easy to install Siri on any jailbroken Apple iOS device.
All of this, unsurprisingly, has led to even more creative uses for Siri. And we imagine this is just the beginning.

Siri Adjusts the Room Temperature

As his maiden Siri hack, developer Pete Lamonica rigged her up to his thermostat, proving that his Siri Proxy indeed works. The hack has Siri send his voice commands to the proxy, which is hooked up to and reads his thermostat, as you can see below.

Siri Starts a Car

Developer Brandon Fiquette hacked Siri to start his car using Lamonica's Siri Proxy plug-in. When Fiquette commands Siri to start the engine, his phone sends a message to a sever on his website that transmits this command to his car, which is outfitted with a Viper Smart Start system that turns on the car. Pretty cool. Here's his video proof:

Siri Controls Your TV

Developer Hjalti Jakobsson created a plugin for Plex, a media player, that allows him to ask Siri to play shows on his TV. She even knows when his TV doesn't have a certain program, as you can see in the video. For the laziest TV watchers, this Siri hack might be just what Steve Jobs had in mind for his "revolutionary" Apple TV:

Siri Can Do Anything

Thanks to Siri Proxy, developers can hook Siri up to anything. The following video by developer Ian McDowell explains how to use the plugin for any possible task:

Siri Can Go Anywhere (See also: Siri Can Do Anything)

Like we said, the jailbreaking community released a set of simple instructions to install Siri on any iOS device. We should remind you that as with any hack you could brick your phone with one wrong move, so consider yourself warned. Success will look something like this:

Apple iPhone spontaneously combusts aboard flight in Australia

An Apple iPhone spontaneously began smoking and emitting a red glow while aboard an airplane in Australia. Passengers aboard Regional Express flight ZL319 were welcomed to their destination in Sydney, Australia on Friday by a frightening ordeal. According to the airline, a passenger’s iPhone began “emitting a significant amount of dense smoke” shortly after the flight landed, and the smoke was accompanied by a red glow. A flight attendant extinguished the device and no passengers or airline staff were injured according to the airline. The phone in question appears to be an iPhone 4 (pictured above) as opposed to the new iPhone 4S model, and it has been collected by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau as part of its investigation. Regional Express’ full press release follows below.

MEDIA RELEASE

Cool, interactive kids' app

There are lots of alphabet books out there. Matching a letter to an object and pairing them with a little bit of cute poetry is a conceit that goes back to the days when alphabet books were printed on a single sheet of paper protected by a thin layer of animal horn.
What makes the iPad/iPhone app X is for X-Ray different is its ability to feed kids' curiosity. Every alphabetic object in X is for X-Ray, from an accordion to a zipper, has had its insides photographed by Hugh Turvey, Artist in Residence at the British Institute of Radiology. (Which sounds like an incredibly cool job, to begin with.)
As you read through the book, you can turn the X-ray vision on and off, rotate some of the images 360 degrees around, zoom in on other images, and even put on a pair of stereoscopic glasses to see things in 3D.
Unsurprisingly, this gimmick works better for some letters than others. A flower, for instance, doesn't make for the most exciting x-ray to look at. Nor does a piggy bank. But the internal combustion engine more than makes up for those brushes with mediocrity. If you put the engine photo in x-ray mode and rotate it, the image comes to life. Suddenly, you're not just looking at the insides of a piece of mechanical technology, you're watching them work—pistons pumping and cranks turning. It's really neat and strikingly beautiful.
My main complaint with the app is really a complaint with app development, in general: X is for X-Ray is only available for iPhone and iPad. I don't own either of those things. If it weren't for the fact that Mike Levad, the app's producer, lives in Minneapolis and brought the app to me to try out on his iPad, I wouldn't even be writing this review. There seems to be a remarkable number of very cool science-related apps that aren't available for Android. I find that a bit annoying.
Watch the video to see a preview of X is for X-Ray.

Download it at the Apple App Store: $7.99 (iPad) and $2.99 (iPhone, iPod touch)

Interactive musical map of Colombia

The excellent Soundway Records label continues its musical exploration of Colombia with another huge compilation, The Original Sound of Cumbia. To promote the release, they've created a really fantastic interactive "Musical Map of Colombia." Browsing the map is a fascinating experience whether or not you intend to buy the new compilation. That said, I'd wager that after a few minutes playing with the map, you'll be inclined to own some of this music. It's available on CD but I'm inclined to go for the two volume, triple (!) vinyl with free MP3 download once it's in-stock at the US distributor Forced Exposure.

Disruptions: Fliers Must Turn Off Devices, but It’s Not Clear Why

Millions of Americans who got on a plane over the Thanksgiving holiday heard the admonition: “Please power down your electronic devices for takeoff.”
And absolutely everyone obeyed. I know they did because no planes fell from the sky. No planes had to make an emergency landing because the avionics went haywire. No planes headed for Miamiended up in Anchorage. We were all made safe because we all turned off all our Kindles, iPads, iPhones, BlackBerrys and laptops, just as the Federal Aviation Administration told us to. Realistically speaking, I’m going to bet that a handful of people on each flight could not be bothered, or forgot to comply.
According to the F.A.A., 712 million passengers flew within theUnited States in 2010. Let’s assume that just 1 percent of those passengers — about two people perBoeing 737, a conservative number — left a cellphone, e-reader or laptop turned on during takeoff or landing. That would mean seven million people on 11 million flights endangered the lives of their fellow passengers.
Yet, in 2010, no crashes were attributed to people using technology on a plane. None were in 2009. Or 2008, 2007 and so on. You get the point.
Surely if electronic gadgets could bring down an airplane, you can be sure that the Department of Homeland Securityand the Transportation Security Administration, which has a consuming fear of 3.5 ounces of hand lotion and gel shoe inserts, wouldn’t allow passengers to board a plane with aniPad or Kindle, for fear that they would be used by terrorists.
New technologies are often greeted with fear and that is certainly true of a disruptive technology like cellphones. Yet rules that are decades old persist without evidence to support the idea that someone reading an e-book or playing a video game during takeoff or landing is jeopardizing safety.
Nevertheless, Les Dorr, a spokesman for the F.A.A., said the agency would rather err on the side of caution when it comes to digital devices on planes.
He cited a 2006 study by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics, a nonprofit group that tests and reports on technical travel and communications issues. The group was asked by the F.A.A. to test the effects of cellphones, Wi-Fi and portable electronic devices on planes.
Its finding? “Insufficient information to support changing the policies,” Mr. Dorr said. “There was no evidence saying these devices can’t interfere with a plane, and there was no evidence saying that they can.” I’m not arguing that passengers should be allowed to make phone calls while the plane zooms up into the sky. But, why can’t I read my Kindle or iPad during takeoff and landing? E-readers and cellphones can be easily put into “Airplane Mode” which disables the device’s radio signals.
The government might be causing more unnecessary interference on planes by asking people to shut their devices down for take-off and landing and then giving them permission to restart all at the same time. According to electrical engineers, when the electronic device starts, electric current passes through every part of the gadget, including GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular radio and microprocessor.
It’s the equivalent of waking someone up with a dozen people yelling into bullhorns.
As more and more people transition from paper products to digital ones, maybe it’s time to change these rules.
Michael Altschul, senior vice president and legal counsel for CTIA, the wireless industry association, said a study that it conducted more than a decade ago found no interference ever from mobile devices.
“The fact is, the radio frequencies that are assigned for aviation use are separate from commercial use,” Mr. Altschul said. “Plus, the wiring and instruments for aircraft are shielded to protect them from interference from commercial wireless devices.”
Mr. Dorr reluctantly agreed. “There have never been any reported accidents from these kinds of devices on planes,” he said.
Correction: Changed 0.01 percent to 1 percent when referring to number of passengers on planes in the United States.

Red Bull one-two in

Sao Paulo, Webber wins

World champion Sebastian Vettel has made dozens of victories in Formula 1 is not completely full. But finishing second behind Mark Webber gave it to the season finale in Sao Paulo on Sunday, the third Red Bull one-two victory of the season after Turkey and Belgium. While it was the only win of the season for Webber, the Briton Jenson Button chose the McLaren finished third in the race for vice-world champion.

Vettel was in his Formula-1-Record of the 15th Pole position in the 71 laps at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace gone, caught even the best start. But after about 14 laps of the 24-year-old complained two weeks after his only season loss in Abu Dhabi on transmission problems with his car. Vettel Red Bull had by pit radio repeatedly pointed out to watch when switching.
Just before half-time of the race on lap 30 Webber went on the last double-world champion in history, but past that. Thus, the positions at the top of the Grand Prix were purchased from Brazil. Webber drove a total of nearly 17 seconds ahead of his seventh career victory, his second in Brazil after 2009 and the first since the first in Hungary August 2010, contrary to. Vettel still cheered: "This will be a year to which they always look back and be proud of. I would not have done it alone. "
As on the previous day's qualifying was announced from the precipitation with which the pilots feared aquaplaning on this course has been spared. Vettel did so without additional turbulence in the record of 392 meters-point mark, Button follows with respect to the distance of 122 points. Webber third as Alonso has 258 points to its name, 257 The British triple-season champion Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren was fifth (227), the Abu Dhabi winning difference in lap time from 47th

The aviation enthusiast leapt from a helicopter and performed a series of aerial acrobatics above the Alps. He then joined two jet planes in a synchronized flight.

To synchronize their flight paths the jets reduced their speed to 220 kilometers per hour (137 miles per hour), which put their engines at a point close to stalling.

Rossy's previous aerial feats include flying the English Channel and looping the loop around a hot-air balloon.

World’s first pee-controlled video game opens in London bar

A bar in London has become the first in the world to offer pee-controlled video games in its bathroom. Taking a leak will never be the same again.

In most pubs and bars, going for a pee involves just that – emptying your bladder, washing your hands and returning to your table. However, take a pee in The Exhibit bar in south London and you’ll have an altogether different experience.
You see, The Exhibit has taken it upon itself to install in its men’s bathroom a number of pee-controlled video games; games with carefully thought up names such as Clever Dick and On The Piste. The system is thought to be the first of its kind in the world, and besides making a trip to the bathroom more entertaining, it will also be an opportunity for advertisers to promote their products.
Developed by UK-based Captive Media, the high-tech urinals come with 12-inch LCD screens fitted just above them. Ads play on the screens until a punter approaches the urinal. Detecting that the punter is in position and ready to pee, the system then switches into gaming mode.
“Sophisticated algorithms then allow the user to do something simple, but VERY engaging – controlling the system just by aiming their stream left or right!” the blurb says on Captive Media’s website. So with the skiing game, you’re able to navigate the course with some subtle but deft movements. How well you do at the game is entirely in your hands, so to speak.

The pee-controlled urinals are the brainchild of Gordon MacSween, a man who is effectively paid too pee. “We tend to drink a lot of water so that we can test the product more often,” he stated.
MacSween said that when the system was trialed at a bar in Cambridge recently, a couple of behavioral changes among the peeing public were noted. “There has been less mess, which we sort of expected because we designed the game so you’re not splashing about, and less vandalism,” he explained.
“When we put it in, people thought it’d be ripped off the wall within a week, but it’s still there after four months. Because people are having a laugh, there’s a lot less vandalism. People just tend to get less angry.”
At one point MacSween was baffled by players’ ability to achieve scores far above anything he ever got. After talking to some customers, he found out why. “It turns out people were learning how to stop and start (their pee flow) to get higher scores.” So if you ever find yourself peeing for points, you know exactly what to do.
The Exhibit bar opened its new bathroom on Friday. It’s quite possible that for the first time ever in a UK drinking establishment, there’ll be more people lining up for the bathroom than for a drink.
It’s not known what, if anything, Captive Media has planned for the women’s bathroom.

Vettel cracked record - 15 Pole of the season

Sebastian Vettel with the 15th Pole position in a season, a new chapter written Formula 1 history. The youngest double world champion captured the premier class in Saturday's final qualifying again this year in Brazil, the first starting position and overtook the British Nigel Mansell, who in 1992 had been on pole 14 times.
"We have made it. Thanks guys, you're incredible, "beamed the German, after he had made short work of the season finale. After Vettel had more than once this year set up practically at the last second, the quality-best time, he made early this time for the preliminary decision. Shortly before closing, he improved his own fastest lap time and even stayed in 1:11,918 minutes alone among the brand of 1:12 minutes.
As for further evidence of the Red Bull reign in F1 Mark Webber was in second place on the front row for the World Cup team on Sunday (17:00 clock live one ORF, RTL and Sky) perfectly. Third in the World Cup runner-up Jenson Button was in front of his McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari star Fernando Alonso.
Vettel made it easily beaten in the World Cup has long been adversaries but not initially. In the first period put the button in front of record time. Team-mate Hamilton, who won two weeks ago after the blowouts and loss of the Grand Prix Vettel Abu Dhabi confirmed, with the second fastest lap of the strength of the McLaren on the bumpy course.
For anxious glances of the eye also caused up: The sky was drawn over the course more and more, the increased humidity and temperatures around 30 degrees continues to increase. The rain stayed away but was afraid. Vettel kept in the crucial ten minutes but once again in impressive fashion, the nerves, while Webber is still in the race for the runners held. The Australians, however, has 22 points behind Button, Alonso still lies in between. The two-time champion from Spain ten points on missing button.

Giant Penis And Jewish Star Found On Business Mogul's

Lawn

Giant penis mystery baffles Stockholm suburb

A wealthy Swedish businessman was surprised to learn on Wednesday that the grounds near his luxurious home appear to feature a giant penis visible only from the sky.

“It may be distasteful, but it's not illegal,” Nicholas Rundbom, a spokesperson for Hitta.se, the Swedish directory and map website which published the phallus-filled aerial photograph, he stated.

The picture came to Rundom's attention when he was contacted by a reporter with business news website Realtid.se who was writing a story about a posh villa belonging to Swedish business icon Per-Olof Söderberg.

Söderberg, founder of the Söderberg & Partners insurance brokerage and board member of the Ratos private equity firm founded by his grandfather in 1933, had put his home up for sale, prompting the news website to take a closer look at the property using Hitta.se

Much to the surprise of the journalist, the grounds near Söderberg's home featured a symbol in the shape of a massive penis, as well as a star, mowed in the grass.

Söderberg, whose home is adjacent to the tennis-court-sized penis, was also clueless about the sex-themed shape in the grass surrounding his compound.

“I didn't know anything about it,” Söderberg told the Expressen newspaper in reference to the newly-discovered phallus.

Following the report, technicians with Hitta.se contacted Metria, the company that supplied the images, to verify that the image, which was taken on April 18th of this year, had not been doctored.

“All six experts said it was clearly real grass and they all used the word 'boyish prank',” Metria spokesperson Johanna Ahlmark told Realtid.se.

“Someone was clearly having fun when mowing the lawn.”

Rundom from Hitta.se marveled at the coincidence that has resulted in the penis-prank being given a long-lasting afterlife on the internet.

“It's highly improbable that those who came up with this creative stunt and cut the grass in that way did so just before a satellite flew overhead and snapped a picture,” he stated.

According to Rundom, Hitta.se has never received a similar report.

While the company hasn't received any complaints about the oversized sex organ, Rundom added that Hitta.se was prepared to make changes to the image if necessary.

When contacted, a spokesperson for Danderyd municipality, in which the
Djursholm district lies, said he wasn't aware of the penis prank.

"This is the first I've heard of it," he said, although he confirmed that the municipality does have responsibility for maintaining public parks and grounds, something which is usually done by a contracted landscaping firm.

Hackers Leak Facebook Law Enforcement Guidelines

A group of hackers claiming to represent Anonymous’s Antisec movement hijacked two Gmail accounts belonging to a retired California Department of Justice cybercrimes investigator, now a private investigator, and on November 18 published 38,000 private emails and identifying contact information online.
Among the data published by the hackers in a torrent file were two versions of what appears to be Facebook’s guidelines for law enforcement agencies, according to Public Intelligence, a collaborative research website dedicated to the freedom of information.
Specifically, the documents posted by the hackers and made available on the Public Intelligence website are two different versions of instructions on how agencies should submit subpoenas and requests for user data from the world’s largest social network, one of them dated 2010 and the other, shorter document dated November 2006.
Sources close to Facebook stated that the newly revealed guideline documents are “outdated,” and that an updated set of law enforcement guidelines is scheduled be made publicly available to all users on Facebook’s Help Center late Wednesday.
The 2006 document notes that Facebook will not provide any user data without “a valid subpoena or warrant,” while the 2010 document states that the social network requires “a valid subpoena or a legal document with equivalent authority issued through your local court system.”
Federal warrant rulings permitting law enforcement agencies to obtain Facebook data have surged in recent years, Reuters reported, with federal judges granting over 24 warrants since 2008.
The newly revealed 2010 document expressly discourages law enforcement officers from creating phony accounts, even for undercover investigations: “We encourage you to report false accounts to Facebook, and discourage any use of false accounts by law enforcement,” the document states.
Both the 2010 and 2006 documents explain how agencies need to first locate a Facebook user’s or group’s unique ID number, which is easily seen in the URL after the letters “id” or “gid.”
The documents state that a law enforcement agency must submit this information to Facebook in order to retrieve information about the account in question. According to the documents, Facebook can then provide agencies with “basic subscription information (BSI)” which includes a user’s email address, mobile phone number (if provided by the user in their Facebook account), the date and time their account was created, and the most recent login times.
The 2006 document states that Facebook can provide a user’s “Neoprint,” which is described as an “expanded view” of a profile, including “all wall postings and messages to and from the user that have not been deleted by the user.” Facebook can, according to the document, also provide “a compilation” of all of a user’s photos and all of a user’s contact information that’s been uploaded, even if it doesn’t appear in their publicly viewable profile.
As far as Facebook Groups, the social network can provide a list of all users in the group, contact information and the current status of the group page, the 2006 document states.
Importantly, though, Facebook points out in the 2006 document that it cannot provide any user data that has already been deleted by the user before the time of the request. That’s seemingly at odds with the deleted data that Facebook turned over to an Austrian user upon request, who later filed a list of complaints with the Irish Data Commissioner, which is now auditing the social network. The 2010 document contains no mention of deleted data.
In addition, Facebook can reportedly provide law enforcement agencies with a user’s Internet Protocol (IP) logs, including the user’s unique IP address, the Facebook usernames associated with that IP address, and the most recent times that IP address viewed Facebook. The 2006 document states that Facebook “generally” retains IP logs for the past 30 days.
Finally, the documents state that the “Facebook Security Team,” may respond to “special requests” for information not contained in the above provisions, as well as provide “emergency disclosures.”
The 2010 document contains a notice that Facebook will immediately disable all user accounts that have been accused of illegal activity, although law enforcement agencies can stop the network from doing this in their request, at least temporarily, by writing “DO NOT DISABLE UNTIL [DATE],” and filling out a corresponding date. This provision is to allow agencies the freedom to continue pursuing an investigation that would otherwise be hindered by shuttering the Facebook account(s).
As Public Intelligence notes, these are actually just the fifth and sixth versions of documents purporting to be the “Facebook Law Enforcement Guidelines” going back to 2007.
Facebook declined to confirm authenticity of any of the prior versions of the documents to Reuters, but the documents contain valid Facebook email and mailing addresses, and the 2010 document contains a Facebook copyright notice.
In addition, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an advocacy group dedicated to protecting users’ digital rights, obtained several copies of the Facebook guidelines from the Justice Department. The EFF commended Facebook for taking a zero-tolerance approach to enforcing its “no fake accounts” policy, even against law enforcement.
That said, the EFF has also pointed out how a November 10 court ruling ordering Twitter to hand over user information to the Justice Department without a warrant or subpoena could also apply to Facebook.
And the Obama Administration was this year supposed to submit to lawmakers a bill that would allow federal law enforcement agencies the ability to use “back doors” to observe all online communications under wiretap orders, even encrypted communications, according to a New York Times report in October 2010. That legislation has yet to be introduced.

Merck accuses US firm of Facebook page larceny

German pharmaceutical giant Merck KGaA has charged that US rival Merck and Co. somehow got control of its Facebook page and won’t give it back. To make matters worse, the company says the social network won’t help resolve the situation.

According to the Handelsblatt newspaper, the German Merck alleged in a New York court filing made an agreement with Facebook in 2010 for exclusive use of the Facebook.com/merck site.

It never developed the page but discovered last month that Merck and Co. has been using it.

Facebook had been “uncooperative” in response to its complaints, Merck KGaA complained in the court filing, explaining that the site could be a valuable advertising tool, according to
Handelsblatt.

It has asked the judge to make a legal determination of who actually has ownership of the site and was considering further action against Facebook for breach of contract, the newspaper wrote.

Neither Facebook nor Merck in Germany immediately responded to The Local’s requests for comment.

But in a curt statement, Merck told
Handelsblatt: “We confirm we have asked Facebook to clarify why we now no longer have a site that we had before.”

Merck and Co. was founded as a subsidiary of the German firm Merck in 1891, but the two companies split up after World War I under the Treaty of Versailles. They are now completely unrelated but have grown into two of the world’s major pharmaceutical giants.
